While Wolverine and the X-Men took an interesting and humourous approach to chronicling the ongoing adventures of Marvel’s mutants and, as has been noted elsewhere, nabbed most of the “cool” characters, Uncanny’s first issue seems to me to simply offer more of the same straight laced, essentially joyless kind of thing that has put me off the X-titles for years. While it’s all very competently handled by an undeniably skilful creative team, there is nothing that makes this book shine, nothing to take away the taste of by-the-numbers, plodding efficiency. In short, I think this book is a serious missed opportunity, and the re-numbering of the title when it really offers nothing new or particularly exciting is nothing more than a cheap marketing gimmick. Ratings? 3. Sticking with it? Heck, no. Jason Aaron and Chris Bachalo get my X-dollars.
