Uncanny X-Force 5.1 proves that Marvel know how to get it done, by bringing some of the best talent in the industry to what was good about 90s comics, and elevate the themes to modern standards and quality. Rick Remender is slowly forcing his way into my heart as one of my favorite writers by making me remotely care about Wolverine, and understand Psylocke’s convoluted past without sullying it. Uncanny is the perfect blend of character and action, giving you just enough incredibly three dimensional character building to allow me to enjoy the over the top, intense action guilt free. Although I still don’t understand the point of the .1 initiative, if the end result is more great one shots like these then I don’t really need to bother with the editorial purpose. As a fan of American Vampire, i was elated to see Rafael Albuquerque on art for this 5.1 in solicits, but when you open up the pages your in for a beautiful surprise. Most of us know that Uncanny X-Force has been blessed with some of the best artists, like Jerome Opena and Esad Ribic who are consistently stepping up their game, but Rafael blows them both out of the water. Taking the brush wash tone style he’s been starting to dabble in on American Vampire and applying that to the massive force that is Dean White, and you get some of the best art comics has ever seen; action packed, exciting, consistent, clear, and above all beautiful.
