This is an action packed comic, but what really makes it special is the marvelous character beats. The Scarlet Witch has been around for decades, but it has taken Rick Remender to finally begin to unlock this character’s huge potential. Gone is the mousey, insecure, uncertain Wanda who was lacking in confidence. Remender introduces us to the new, regal, almost imperious Wanda who is a true daughter of Magneto. As the mind controlled Thor attacks her, the Scarlet Witch says, “You rush headlong? You are truly out of your mind – and clearly do not remember whom you face,” as she flings a truck at the thunder god. This is a change in the Scarlet Witch’s personality, but it is justified given the events of “House of M.” Remender also begins to make sense of the Scarlet Witch’s powers. In “House of M,” Doctor Strange says that there is no such thing as chaos magic. In this issue, it appears that while there may not be “chaos magic,” Wanda taps into a well of chaos energy by using magic to focus her mutant power. In an earlier issue, Rogue tried to steal Wanda’s power but couldn’t figure out how to use it, and Wanda told her that magic is what helps her to control her mutant ability. Rick Remender also writes the Red Skull better than anyone I have read. Like a true Nazi, the Skull tells Captain America that in the new “Reich Eternal,” life will be “orderly, safe and clean.” The villain uses propaganda and his psychic powers in an attempt to delude Cap. “[America has] an incurably sick culture that breeds only parasites, greedy polluters, and psychotic madmen,” sneers the Skull. While Havok also has some revealing character moments, I think Remender is pushing a little too hard with Rogue’s distrust of Wanda. Rogue of all people should be willing to forgive. Besides, she should know that heroes in the Marvel universe go crazy or get mind controlled every other day. I have not been a huge John Cassaday fan in the past, but I think his work has gotten better and better. Gone are the pencil necks, and he seems to have honed his skill at depicting subtle facial expressions. I love the half smile on the Scarlet Witch’s face when she tells Havok, “ Don’t worry … I won’t hurt him [Thor]” The smoky, red swirls of energy that Wanda manifests when she uses her power look awesome. On the whole, this issue of “Uncanny Avengers” is inspired comic book making.
