I’m one of those people that joined the Ultimate Spider-Man train late.  And it wasn’t because I thought it was bad.  I just wasn’t really all that interested.  But after everything that’s been going on with the regular Spider-Man books, I decided to turn to Bendis’ opus to get my Spider-Man fix, and boy am I glad I did.  I’ve been enjoying the heck out of the series and this issue is no different.

This issue finds our intrepid hero captured by The Shocker, one of the villains that Peter dubs his “once a week villain” (as in, he beats them up at least once a week).  But it turns out that it’s time for Shocker to get his revenge and what starts as a happenstance tussle, turns into a kidnapping.  The story mainly focuses on the interactions between Shocker and Peter (who, as the cover indicates, hangs from a ceiling in chains sans mask), but in the background, a rescue attempt brews between Kitty Pryde, MJ, and the NYPD.  Yeah, crazy, right?  I don’t want to spoil the issue for everyone, but let’s just say that it’s a lot of fun seeing Peter deconstruct the craziness brewing in Shocker’s mind.  Add that to the fact we see more revelations about the Roxxon corporation, and this reader is just excited about where this story is going.

I’ve been a long time fan of Immomen’s art, but this issue is probably one of the best thigns I’ve seen him draw.  It’s just dynamic and action packed, and even when Peter hangs from the ceiling, there’s this life in his pencils that makes you feel a part of the scene.  It’s just wonderfull.

This was a really great issue, and I’m really digging where Bendis is going with this series.  Hopefully, with the apparent return of the symbiote stuff the title won’t take a nose dive.

  1. I totally agree about Immomen’s art.  I get the feeling that artist and writer are getting more and more on the same page.  I hope that we get 100 issues of Immomen on this book. The great supporting characters and their story lines are what keeps this one of my favorite books.
