When I reviewed the interesting, but not necessarily good Ultimates #1, I mentioned that while bashing Jeph Loeb is trendy, it’s also very much deserved.  Most of his comic book work from the last few years is, at best, silly fluff.  It is sometimes engangingly written, often paired with immensely talented artists like Cho, Sales,  and Madureira.  One thing it has not been, to me, in the last few years is impactful.  It’s not given me any reasons to care about his characters.  Sometimes, like with the red Hulk fiasco, I not only don’t care about his characters, I don’t know who they are.

Issue #1 of Ultrimate X didn’t draw me in.  Wolverossus, the magically admantium bonded son of Wolverine is just…ugh…you can’t kill Wolverine without bringing in clones, children, old Weapon X allies… really, Ultimate Dogpool can’t be too far behind.

This issue starts with a new story.  It’s narrated by a mall security guard who is in love with the perfect woman.  Wendy.  A really sweet, attractive girl who works in one of the mall stores.  But Wendy isn’t some random pretty face.  She’s Jean Grey.

What unfolds is a love story between the security guard and Jean, and between Jean and the X-men who died during Ultimatum, another Loeb story that I didin’t enjoy.  And, while some of Loeb’s work feels like he just randomly cut and pasted some cliches together and called it a comic, this is a well-crafted comic about grief.  Some other mutants make appearances, but the crux of the story is what Jean has done to put Ultimatum behind her.

Adams’s art usually speaks for itself, and does here.  If you avoided picking up this issue because of the name Loeb on it, I definitely recommend putting that prejudice aside, and picking it up.  I waited five days to pick this up, and I regret it.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 5 - Excellent

  1. Surprisingly this book was dead to me after the amatuerish first issue. I have to say this one was so good. It even became my POTW.  I’m hoping the book turns out to be more like this then focus on Wolverlad.
