Jonathan Hickman’s craft is unmatched as of late; somehow he manages to maintain so many different styles of storytelling and keep them all fresh and original. This third issue of the Ultimate Thor origin story feels completely different to anything else Hickman has done in his career, and also manages to surpass most other versions of the character, particularly Matt Fraction’s current run on the regular title. This issue deals with the war to save Asgard from Loki/Baron Zemo and the Frost Giants; it’s basically an issue chock-full of intense action and story-driven moments that tie neatly into Ultimate continuity. Loki’s origins are also explored as his descent into villainy is revealed, and Hickman shows that he can write some seriously sinister stuff as the God of Mischief confronts Balder. Carlos Pacheco continually makes this book an amazingly fun read; his action sequences are breathtaking, while his character models maintain the style and originality of the Ultimate Universe, while also incorporating some regular continuity designs and putting a unique spin on them. When this is done this will be one of the Thor comics to recommend to people post-movie; it may not be regular Thor, but damn if it isn’t good Thor.
