I have always thought of the Ultimates as a metaphor for the tensions within our modern day military industrial complex society. Rereading Millar’s initial run as a representation of the arms race brought on by the war on terror is perhaps giving the story more depth than it intended to have, but the reading is there, regardless. Throughout the series’ history and particularly in the last 20 issues has been a palpable sense of looming destruction and chaos, much like the feeling one gets from analyzing the real world. That foreboding doom is there in this issue as the characters discover where Fury has been hiding. Although it is too early in the arc to say that Humphries is simply redoing what has come before, this is not the first time that Ultimate Fury has lost his job and done crazy things to get it back. Thor and Sue Storm are putting together the infinity gauntlet, evil West Coast Ultimates are teased, and Hawkeye might get shot. The stakes are high, but I think I am most interested in Nails, the HYDRA soldier who has come dangerously close to Fury. Hopefully with this character Humphries will be able to make the social commentary that the Ultimate books have the potential for, even if it’s brief and underdeveloped. It’s a good looking book and the dialogue is sharp enough—this is one of those times when I feel 4.5 is more accurate than 4 or 5 stars. It’s hard to get enough President Cap.
