I miss Sara Pichelli.

Really, I do. And even though I wasn’t exactly dwelling on that as I read the latest ULTIMATE COMICS SPIDER-MAN, I constantly thought things like, “Oh, wait. That’s Ganke?” It’s not so dramatic (or negative) a shift as when Bagley left ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN, because I just liked so much less the way his successors rendered the characters there, but it’s a big shift nonetheless.

But the story. Bendis is doing a lot; too much. He does pull out the same old tricks. Every time I pick up a Bendis comic, I wonder if it will finally be my last – finally be the time that I’m like, “Okay, I’m convinced I won’t miss anything if I never read Bendis again.” But USM #6 is no slouch. It’s got good promise for things to come, and though I could do with a little more character development a little more quickly, I’m really digging the story that’s going here. I like that this is still SPIDER-MAN…but also not. Miles’s internal monologue, for instance, is less irritating than Peter’s.

As the beginning of a new arc, this is a decent jumping-on point for people who didn’t pick up the first five issues. If you’re interested, it might be worth your while.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 3 - Good

  1. I’ll be picking up the first five issues in trade. Though I’ve heard it’s a great book, when I picked up issue one at the store, it just felt really thin for the money.

    • The earlier issues were. The first bit of the origin could definitely have been done in fewer issues. But now that Miles is actually in costume and everything, the pacing feels a bit more reasonable for now.

  2. Good review.

I’ve also had a love/hate relationship with Bendis’s writing for the past few years (I USED to always like it, before his dialogue got too annoying). But this new incarnation of Ultimate Spidey is, in my opinion, consistently the best writing Bendis has done in years.

I read the first three issues in a Marvel “Must Have” one-shot, for $4.99. Which was awesome. But, yeah, $4 is a lot for a decompressed comic. So I decided not to buy the current issue but maybe pick it up in trade, if the reviews are good.

I was sorry to see Sarah P leave as well. I’ll be following the reactions of other people to find out whether Samnee is a good replacement, but . . . I never really cared for his art all that much. And he doesn’t seem like a good replacement for what Sarah started.

    • I think Bendis Tweeted earlier this week that she’s not done on Ultimate Spidey, but he didn’t say whether she’d be back after this arc or what. I hope so. Since the Prowler plot we’re starting down is a little grittier crime-like, Samnee’s art is okay for it, but afterward…I’d rather have her.
