While I am questioning the hype around "the death of spider-man," and questioning whether it is in Marvel's interest to end one of the most consistently good books of the past decade, I still trust Bendis to tell this story. he gets the character and his world in a way few Spidey writers have before. I also am still holding out hope that this will not be the end of Ultimate Peter. In any case, this issue was very well written. Bagley's return was welcome. For all of the great artists this book has had on it, it has still always kind of been in the shadow of Bagley, and having him back feels like a pleasant homecoming. He's a natural for this book. It is always nice when a writer can actually cause you fear for the characters you care about. The Green Goblin is probably one of the only villains in this book that is genuinely frightening and a real threat (with the possible exception of Dr. Octopus.) His return here is very foreboding and does well to ratchet up the tension. The speech by Captain America mid-issue was a great piece of writing, and clearly speaks towards the larger theme of the arc. Soldiers (like Peter), must eventually confront death. And all soldiers will eventually die. Unfortunately, we don't get to hear the rest of what Cap was going to say because plot happened. This was a solid issue. The art was great and the writing was fantastic as usual.
