Despite the fact that everyone seems to hate Ultimate Captain America, I think he’s the sort of character the Ultimate Universe needs to keep it dark and edgy; he’s not Steve Rogers as we know him, more a perverted version of the same character – an example of how war can transform a man into a hate-filled killing machine. That’s why it’s great to see Jason Aaron writing him; penning a character that is so filled with hatred and just needs to explode is exactly the sort of thing Aaron does so well in Scalped, and here it’s just as good. This is an action-packed issue, too; it introduces a lot of new characters and manages to remain coherent and engaging. The art by Ron Garney is just as good as it was on Wolverine Weapon X, and it keeps the story in check with an array of stellar visuals and some strangely scratchy pencils. Regardless, this is the most excited I’ve been about an Ultimate book, outside of Ultimate Spider-Man, for quite some time and it didn’t disappoint.
