It may appear to be descending in quality, but Ultimate Avengers 3 has actually been a lot of fun; sure, it’s not as powerful and riveting as The Ultimates, but it’s certainly a damn sight better than anything Jeph Loeb’s done in the Ultimate Universe, and it manages to incorporate the vampire mythology teased in Ultimate Spider-Man, to boot. The issue is basically half build up and half fight scene, as the Avengers face off against the vampire armies; it’s violent and wonderful to look at thanks to Steve Dillon’s great pencils – the sooner he gets back to work on Punisher MAX the better. There’s some unexpected character development in this issue, too, as Mark Millar expands on the character of Perun, the evil Thor from his original run on The Ultimates, as we learn about how and why he joined the team. It’s good stuff, and while not the best it does serve as popcorn entertainment in comic book form, and at the end of the day, that’s what lots of people are looking for.

Story: 3 - Good
Art: 5 - Excellent
