I picked this up by accident.  I keep forgetting who’s writing Ultimates, and who’s writing Ultimate Avengers.  I thought the first volume of Ultimate Avengers (you know, that ancient one that ended a week ago) was garbage, and it had me thinking that Marvel should really keep Millar away from their heroes.

That opinion hasn’t really changed.  BUT.  But Ultimate Avengers 2 is about anti-heroes.  And this issue focuses on Marvel’s favorite non-admantium laced anti-hero Frank Castle.  Not the Remenderized hulking whats-it that’s mostering its way around the 616, but the old school Punisher.  In fact, the background of this version of Frank, and his roster of mob enemies is very similar to Garth Ennis’s Punisher.  BUT.  But with a bonus.  Imagine Ennis’s Punisher being the one who, at the end of Civil War became Captain America.  This really was everything I could have hoped for in an Ultimate version of The Punisher.  And next month they go and add *spoiler* (no, not Stephanie Brown) to the team?  Ok, Millar you win, I’m totally on this book.

  1. Cool. I’ll pick it up.  I lost interest in the last one.

  2. Agreed, that last page reminded me of what the first two Ultimates volumes felt like
