In the weeks leading up to Trinity’s debut, I had little reason to doubt that Kurt Busiek and Mark Bagley would deliver anything but greatness in each other’s company. After all, I was a big fan of Busiek’s work in SUPERMAN: Secret Identity and JLA. With Ultimate Spider-Man recently coming into my life, as well, Bagley’s art seemed like a sure thing.

Unfortunately, life often teaches us that sure things aren’t quite as “sure” as they might seem. The first five issues of Trinity have been, to put it gently, pretty mild. Aside from an ominous dream that Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman all shared, we haven’t gotten much in the way of solid story progression. Instead, we’ve gone through a month of fighting Konvikt, a giant purple hulk badly in need of some manscaping.

As for the secondary stories, their inconsistent quality and seeming irrelevance has kind of killed the momentum going from issue to issue. The art isn’t quite as pretty, the writing isn’t quite as sharp, oh, and there isn’t quite as much Trinity. Apparently they’ve begun bundling the book with How to Write Awkward Hispanic Characters: An Essay Told Through Examples.

So why have I stuck with the book week after week when it’s clearly not pulling its own weight? Hope, you could say. I know Busiek’s a great writer, and I know Bagley’s a great artist. 52 was, after all, marred by some mediocre content in its early run before it got its feet off the ground, so I’ve been willing to give Trinity the same shot.

Well, finally, with Issue #6, that little bugger named intriguing has begun to rear his glorious noggin. The World’s Greatest Heroes have finally started cracking the riddle as to why they’re so important in this game of cosmic coincidence, and the secondary story seems to finally be melding with the main plot. There’s still some hokey dialogue to be found, and I still see Mary Jane every time I look at Wonder Woman, but I’m starting to see the meat, and Lord knows, I’m a hungry man.

Story: 3 - Good
Art: 3 - Good

  1. I think you’re right that #6 was the best so far. I think this series will really get good once it gets some momentum going and gets past the set-up.

  2. Excellent review  & summation of the series so far!! I agree with everything you said, from the dodgy hispanic dialogue to myself continuing reading this for one reason — hoping it gets good.

It’s about time this series started to move, let’s hope it keeps going forward. This is the first issue I put down & actually thought: "I wanna see what happens next".

ps – LOL @ "Manscaping". I never heard that before, I’m gonna use it!
