Look a parade!
Trinity continues to march (sometimes it seems like plod) forward as a team of the big three’s “significant others” cross to a new dimension where purple aliens revere mountain peaks shaped like Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman. Meanwhile, a bunch of other heroes try to stop Earth from disintegrating, and Tomorrow Woman does a mean Avengers’ impression and gets disassembled.
* sigh *
Trinity started out well enough, but something seems missing lately. It’s ironic that the series is falling victim to its own plot point. With Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman written out of reality in the story, the energy also seems to have left Trinity: The Comic Book. Let’s face it, if you are writing a series featuring the big three, taking them out of the story poses some problems.
The way around this conundrum would be to bring in some great supporting characters to fill the void and keep the readers diverted until the Big Three make their inevitable return. Busiek starts off on the right foot; I dig the appearances by Tomorrow Woman, Firestorm, Black Adam, Vibe, Sky Rocket, Triumph, Ragman, Tatters, Hawkman, Alan Scott, Lionheart, and all the other little known heroes who have grabbed a few lines in the series. In fact, the decompressed format of the weekly series offers a great opportunity to spotlight these characters. How cool would it be for that spotlight to fall on Vibe or Triumph or the Space Ranger for half-an-issue, as they realize that, if the big three come back, they’re dead?
Unfortunately, in place of the DC regulars, we get more Tarot, Konvict, Swashbuckler, TVM, and (ugh) Primat. Sadly, I’m just not digging these guys near as much as the DC staples and would gladly see the lot of them replaced by Madame Xanadu, Despero, Deathstroke, Dreamslayer, and Gorilla Grodd respectively. Konvict (and that yappy critter on his back) in particular leave me cold. I appreciate Busiek’s desire to add a few new heroes and villains to the DC universe, but among the new characters we have more misses then hits. By comparison, I really liked the cameo by Nocturna earlier in the series. Post-crisis, she’s pretty much an enigma, and I’m curious to see (fingers crossed) how she’s used by future writers.
Busiek has given more good stories than bad. So this may just be a lull as the book catches its breath. We’ll see.
Bagley’s art … still great despite the weekly schedule.
Art: 5 - Excellent
