It’s inevitable that someone will hate this. As great as it may be to try turning people on to new things, it so often backfires. If you had no previous interest in the Transformers prior to reading this, there’s a good chance you might not like it. Some people just don’t appreciate transforming robots.

If you do have a thing for transforming robots though, welcome to the brilliant world of IDW’s new ongoing Transformers series, written by Mike Costa, writer of IDW’s recent “Cobra” series and illustrated by Don Figueroa, artist of Dream Wave’s “Transformers – The War Within” (<---quite possibly the best Transformers series you will ever find on paper).

IDW’s new ongoing takes place 2-3 years after the events of “All Hail Megatron”, which is also, seemingly, new reader friendly. Here the Autobots have made themselves incognito as the humans, er’ Skywatch, endure “to capture all robotic invaders on the planet”.

The animosity between mankind and Autobots might be Costa’s most effective tool in taking this story beyond the elementary fare that has often plagued Transformers tales. IDW has provided a generous backdrop for Costa to play with as well. Plot lines such as the Stormbringer tale, Hunter O’Nion’s conversion to headmaster, etc. will give new readers the chance to backtrack, becoming more involved in the story.

And in case you missed it, I highly recommend the “Transformers Continuum” released just last week. It will definitely enhance your understanding of the events which follow. “Transformers Ongoing #1” is an easy call for my POTW, though, I only read two books, “Flash: Rebirth” being the other. So this may or may not be a fair assessment. Either way, I loved it and I hope you do, too.

  1. The War Within is pure magic. Good call.

  2. Man now I have to go searched though my books for The War Within, I remember getting it but don’t think I got all the issues.  It’s that or just don’t remember the story but I’ll have to check it out again along with this series. I’m hoping Costa has another GI Joe Corba in this book.
