As one of the 20 Transformers fans here at IFanboy I would like nothing more than to tell you this is the best TF story since The War Within, but unfortunately I cannot. It’s not to say things can’t change. Shane McCarthy could be laying out a story that will become even more dismal than I could have hoped for by trying to make me care about these puny humans. But I don’t think so.

It’s important to know what I expected from this story to get my dissapointment. See, I’m the guy who’s been waiting my whole life to see Tom overcome Jerry, the Coyote capture the Roadrunner and the Decepticons defeat the Autobots. So when I see the premise to this particular story: ‘The day the Decepticons won’. That’s what I expect to see.

It could be that Shane’s following the contemporary path of storytelling by beginning the story from the end, and likely he is. You don’t think he’d neglect showing us how this situation came to be? I don’t either (or would he?). But, in telling this story as he has he’s made a fatal mistake: he’s shown us that the Decepticons superiority can’t last. Because, almost certainly, this group of people being brought together (the pilot, Witwicky, etc.) will save humanity from the clutches of evil. Yecch!

Been there, done that. Got 98 episodes of it on DVD. This time I want things to be different. Tell a story that hasn’t been told. That’s all I’m asking. How about showing us what happens when Megatron no longer has Prime, the yin to his yang (wait a second. didn’t that happen in TF the movie?). Let’s see what happens when the Decepts get power hungry and try to overthrow Megatron, or what happens when they finally rape Earth of its natural resources. Then what?!

So the Decepticons have been in charge before, but it’s always expected to end. This arc just seems to be a retelling of the same. I expect more from professional writers, spec. when I know I could do better. Admittedly there have been some moments which have appealed to my sadistic side. I love seeing the Decepticons toy with the humans as they have. I just don’t like feeling/knowing that it’s going to end before its even began.

Story: 2 - Average
Art: 4 - Very Good

  1. I disagree with your claim of this title’s predictability and lack of originality. I’ve been enjoying the premise of this book most of all because we get to see the bad guys act without the Autobot-Decepticon power struggle being the focus of the story. Instead of being the bad guys just because they’re fighting the good guys, we get to see just why the Decepticons are regarded as "evil". I also did a review of this book, so check it out if you care to see the rest of my opinion. Your points are nicely put, though! They just don’t lead me to the same conclusion.

  2. Ah, I see what you’re saying. I think the only way this story could go on indefinetely is if it were an alternate universe sorta thing. THey’re trying too hard to establish IDW’s TF canon to worry about alternates right now, though. It’ll be cool when that day comes, though, and we can explore lots of possibilities without being dragged back to the TF "reality".
