I have no real history with Thor and he's not really any kind of "sacred cow" character for me. I've dipped in and out of his book over the years, although I know as a kid I always had a real problem with the Thor-speak. I wanted to like the Strazynski stuff, and the art was gorgeous, but what I read of it moved sooooo sloooowwlly. Still, I like Kieron Gillen a lot and think he's bringing a unique new voice, so gave this a shot and was really pleasantly surprised. I am, however, going to skip over the art. I don't like Billy Tan at all, but at the same time I am not mortally wounded by looking at it. It's just there.
The story however was good supergodly stuff and I am anticipating the next issue. There is a notable lack of Thor, which I thought would be an issue for a casual reader like myself. That wasn't the case though as the Asgardian characters really engaged me. There is Thor-speak but it's not at all overbearing and, in fact, the script flows really nicely. Likewise, I find Donald Blake a sympathetic, appealing alter ego and loved his interaction with the cameoing Fantastic Four (or two). On the other side, there's the villain of the piece, Doctor Doom, and I would have to say that this is the best I've seen him written in a long time. For one, he's actively pursuing a dastardly scheme for a change, rather than just talking to other villains. Then there's the fact that what he's doing and the way he acts are both extremely chilling. It's stating the obvious, but this is Doom being really villainous, and not just misunderstood as he sometimes seems recently.
The most important plus factor though has to be that something is actually happening! The Asgardians are rallying to take on Victor and through the issue we build nicely to that showdown. The storytelling is economical and there's no padding. Not only that but there's anticipation too, you want to get to the next page. Gillen's really kickstarted things here, leading to that final page which had me suppressing a huge cheer. So I would say, ignore the art and accept that it just does it's job serviceably. Instead rejoice in the fact that Thor's in action again and, on the basis of part one, this run could be a real blast.
