The second issue of this big-name indie fulfills all the promise of the first, which is something. I find that Conrad (aka Redmond, master thief, because “great thieves are brands”) is a character I sympathize with, a man who’s devoted his life to pursuits too tempting to turn down but ultimately unfulfilling.

Having bowed out of the Venice job last ish, Conrad now heads to try to mend things with his ex-wife, Audrey. The story again skips between then and now, giving us some background on this relationship when it was young, along with some stylish heist action. The state of this relationship now is not unlike many other divorced couples you’ve read or seen, but it feels sincere enough.

The art’s good. Shadowed in the right places. The scenes lack the insane dynamism that superhero comics can pull off (to their advantage), and maybe the characters aren’t yet rendered with quite the super-cool edge to their attitude, just standing there, that actors bring to great screen caperers. But it’s certainly not hard on the eyes.

This is a book to watch.

Story: 5 - Excellent

  1. I regret that I did not pick this up. The first issue was killer!
