Man, it is hard to know where to start when reviewing a book that bursts with so many thought provoking concepts and ideas at once. If you followed things this far, you know that shit is going down this issue. We have been on a journey through time; exploring revelations about different members of the cabal, and the nature of stories throughout history with the .5 issues. Along the way we have followed our main trio on a hunt for an explanation regarding Tom's crazy life.
The craziest part about the mythology in "The Unwritten" is that it is true. If enough people believe in something for long enough, it becomes true. Even if it is something that never actually happened. An good example would be the old-world belief that the world was flat. For years everyone thought it was flat, it looked flat, and no one could dispute it, so by all intents and purposes it was flat. Until Magellan sailed around the world and proved that the earth was spherical; then our collective consciousness changed enough, and because of that, one could argue, the shape of the Earth changed.I don't mean this literally, but for arguments sake.
So by now, I'm sure you either think I'm crazy, or you at least partially agree with my reasoning. This is the kind of stuff that runs through my head while reading this book, and I love it. Organized religion is another great example of collective belief manifesting actual events, but that depends on who you talk to, and I don't even want to open that can of worms.
Wow, so I haven't really talked about the issue yet. Let's se if I can do a run-down: Pullman killed his brother way back in the dawn of early civilization. Through the telling of his tale over generations he has a sort of immortatlity due to his connection with the Leviathan(Humanity's collective consciousness). This same leviathan connection has begun to change Tom into "Tommy" from his father's books by manifesting the beliefs of the millions of readers. That is why Tom's wand works, and the doorknob and such. So this issue is Pullman explaining all this to Tom, and testing a plan of his to finally die by injuring the Leviathon itself using Tom as a voodoo doll stand-in. There is even a little "Meta" moment where Pullman explains that the leviathon(Us) is watching him and Tom, and they need to go for a twist that HE(again:Us) won't see coming, it is pretty awesome.
Reading "The Unwritten", I am always rewarded with these kinds of ideas. they keep me thinking and wondering long after I have finished the issue. It is the kind of book you'll want to re-read, and make all of your friends try. I guess I've rambled on long enough now. Thanks for reading.
