Ever since we were given a glimpse of the captive Decepticon superweapon Overlord trapped in the basement of the Autobot ship we knew something was bound to happen with him, and it likely wasn’t going to be good. This issue finally begins to deliver on that promise. Reading the issue gives a growing sense of dread, like watching the sun being eclipsed by a massive storm. You know what’s coming is going to be terrible and cause a lot of damage for our characters, but there is nothing you can do to stop it.

Writer James Roberts has proven an expert at creating complex characters from very little and he continues here with back stories for both Overlord and Chromedome. Roberts is able to raise and then answer questions about these characters that I never would have thought of asking. He has succeeded in creating a truly unique and alien culture and way of thinking for Transformers that’s still understandable of those of us made of flesh and bone.

The artwork by Alex Milne is top notch. It has become the gold standard for Transformer art, combining a certain bit or almost cartoony like look for the faces. With some characters lacking most facial features he uses things like bulging eyes or sharply narrowed eyes to help convey emotion. It’s akin to having the eyes on Spider-Man’s mask change shape or size and is extremely effective. This is contrasted with the scenes of brutal violence, the type of which could only be done in a book with robotic beings. It almost lulls you into a false sense of security, making the violence all the more shocking.

This is quite possibly the best issue of More Than Meets the Eye yet, and it is merely a tease for what is to come in the following issues. If this is just a taste of what we are in store for then I am ready for the main course.
