Dan Slott deserves high praise for his compelling long-form switch-a-roo. In the build up to a Parker-free Superior Spider-Man, we have seen Ock apply his previously villainous penchant for master-planning to a more strategic employment of Spidey's methods. In this issue I found myself agreeing that Ock is truly being superior in respects. At the climax of the issue, there is an explosion at MJ's club, courtesy of the newly arrived Green Goblin. Ock kept a Spidey-spy robot trained on the place, but it failed to warn him due to the Goblin's tinkering. So when his police monitor tells him of a fire, Ock reroutes a fire truck to MJs club and prioritizes nabbing 3 major crime lords. We find that everyone got out of the club safely. Peter would have been at the club. No question. And he would have been wrong. We are unsure if Ock would have gone, but the amazing thing is, the result is better because he wasn't. The NYFD did the job! Slott rounding out Ock's story to compelling effect. A romance with an smart, attractive, and good hearted woman. Yes -- I'm leaving out one of her physical attributes because it doesn't bear mentioning. Really appreciating Peter's family and prioritizing them as well. But Ock is a killer. And vicious. Then again, so is Wolverine. Cap's a soldier -- he's had to kill in wartime. Lot's of Marvel's pantheon has blood on their hands. Peter doesn't. But Peter's not here. And that leads to storytelling that is genuinely new and full of surprising possibilities. Which may be Slott's greatest achievement. Someday Pete'll be back. But no hurry, please.
