I picked this up because I had read about this is infamous forest near Mt. Fuji, and wanted some good monthly horror. Well, it turned out to be a fantastic surprise.
The sketchy art is reminiscent of Ben Templesmith, albeit with backgrounds, but perfectly fits the mood. The world seems well researched and believably and the story does a great job of switching between and contrasting simultaneous narratives. In the first half the story it is split between government workers who look after (clean up) the park and everything that entrails, as well as an American who has been living in Tokyo for a few years and the well written relationship problems he has. I won’t spoil the second half of the comic, but I was incredibly impressed by how the pages mirrored each other, and the black humor and horror it created.
If this was a Vertigo or even Image book I can see it creating a lot of hype, especially considering the attention the awfully mediocre iZombie is getting (Allred’s great art aside). I look forward to seeing more of the horror that creeped in by the end, and hope the supernatural doesn’t play too large a role.
Art: 5 - Excellent
