So far, I’ve been enjoying this series. It’s a war tale, wrapped in a spy conspiracy, with a bit of mysticism thrown in for good measure. It’s certainly the type of tale that Garth Ennis exceeds at telling well. And it is a good tale. My only beef with it is that the Shadow himself is only used sparingly. The scenes with him are AWESOME, but they, so far, have been few and far between. It seems like Ennis is using Lamont Cranston as the brains and The Shadow as the brawn, but that sort of contradicts the old stories, where the Shadow was as cunning as he was brutal. Maybe this globetrotting tale is more fitting for an international man of mystery since the Shadow always fought New York’s underbelly. On the other hand, the story is really intriguing and the plot is expertly done. The art has its moments of greatness, but I have to admit that the talking heads in this sometimes don’t look that great. I find the line work appealing, but the details seem to lack for me in the character’s expressions and acting. The storytelling is strong, though, which is important for this book, and by gum, the scenes with the Shadow are expertly done with dynamic panels and an increased sense of action, which is why I want to see more of them. I get the sense that Ennis has some real plans for this book as a whole, so maybe we’ll see the Shadow appear more as the story continues on. So far, though, this has been a really solid book that edges on greatness for me but can’t quite find its footing.
