I’ve never read any other work of Brian Wood. When I came into the series, it was merely because I was interested in the basic conceit – environmentalists trying to do good after the end of the world. While the story for the first few issues seemed slightly disconnected, by the end of the first arc was a strong showing. Now, Brian Wood and Garry Brown start us on a new arc that continues the upward trend of the book.

The Massive’s power lies within the universe its created in just 4 issues. This issue focuses on main character Callum Israel, giving a look into his past life working for a PMC and his current pacifist ways. The high point of the story takes place between Callum and an old mercenary “buddy” in the middle of a Somalian Bazar, and Wood’s writing really cements these characters as interesting, multi-layered players in a much larger world.

Art from Garry Brown is similar to Kirsten Donaldson, but with a much darker pallet. It fits for the setting in the slums of Somalia, and each page is packed with detail and beauty. If anyone was worried about new artists for the book, Brown’s work should dispel any fear about multiple artists on the book.

Story: 5 - Excellent
