This book is NOT Marvels redux. It is a clever attempt to tell a tale that has never been integrated – the beginnings of the Marvel Universe. In many ways, the Marvel Universe is more cohesive than the DCU (to which it must naturally be compared), but DC has been more concerted in its efforts to make its universe a complete one, largely through forced but ultimately successful efforts such as the crisis books.

Rather, this is a neat tale about pieces that previously could have fit together and now do just that – more like a stew than a five course meal. There are some interesting additions, including some of the characters from The Twelve (curse you, JMS). What really makes the characters meld is the Steve Epting art. Epting is a great artist, and in my mind he is the definitive Brubaker penciller (and that’s saying something, since Sean Philips is great). The whole story looks quite a bit like an era-appropriate run of the Brubaker/Epting Captain America.

If I were to have any critique, it is that the story is a little light on intrigue (at least to this point). Things seem to be going much too smoothly. Nick Fury’s efforts are brilliant, and the Angel is successful right off the bat. Not that there isn’t sadness – a crimefighter is killed – but we have not yet experienced true horrors. Maybe we will, especially as Brubaker loves pathos.

Still, this is a very strong series, and I respectfully disagree with Ron Richards’ suggestion that this tale has already been told in Marvels and other places. It is certainly one of the strongest titles of this week.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent
