This volume of the Incredible Hulk started with such promise and a bang up premise. Jason Aaron has crafted one hell of a tale...one part the twisted science of Island of Dr Moraeu, one part the human tragedy of Faust and the other part the sheer lunacy of Plan 9 From Outer Space. And he should be applauded for doing it. The whole story of the Hulk coming to Dr Doom and having Banner surgically removed from him is chilling and extreme, the sight of Banner as a lunatic and the Hulk being the good guy was so traumatic I clamored for more...but the most unsettling thing about this arc? The revelation that without the Hulk, Banner would have turned out exactly like he did..a twisted megalomaniac on the scale of the High Evoloutionary. Folks, that is a hell of a roller coaster ride of a story...
Too bad the art was subpar...yet again...
Another sloppy art job from Portacio dooms a damn fine story. Why he keeps getting work with lazy storytelling, shoddy layouts and bland pencilling amazes me. I miss Silvestri's work on this book, and I am no fan of his either. This book may not read like an Image comic circa 1993, but it damn well looks like one of the lower teir books. I am hoping that the art team goes bye bye for good, if they don't I am thinking of dropping this book if they come back.
