What Ryall and Kieth offer us is a fairly straightforward tale of class disparity in a dystopian future, and it's fantastical, thought-provoking, and entertaining. It's just a shame that it's marred by poor editing and some devices that I would expect from rookies, not seasoned pros like these two. There's a strange protagonist who checks in on those who live in the world left behind, gliding over the zombie-infested wasteland on mechanical bat wings. These zombies suck the life force from people, and can be pacified temporarily with a modified fire extinguisher(that kind of quirkiness is vintage Kieth). There are giant trees that house the pockets of humanity who are lucky enough to live free of the horrors below, and the moral dilemma that accompanies their situation. It's an intriguing set-up, to be sure. Now here comes the 'but'. There are a few spelling mistakes, which while not a huge deal, pull anal retentives like me right out of a story. Then there's the Sam Kieth flub that always drives me nuts. The unnecessary expository balloons. One says 'burned hand' and points to what, if the art reads properly, is a man's burned hand. Another reads 'hurt eye' and points to a woman's eye patch. This is an pointless contrivance. Kieth is a wonderful artist, and he's better than this. The palette used in this book is gloomily apropos, and the world built around the characters really comes to life on the page in most cases. You've got us hooked, guys. Please don't phone this in or get lazy on us. I'm very curious to see what the next issue has to offer.
