Let’s see… I love Gail Simone. Totally dig EVS. Think Yildiray’s art is great.

So why is it I’m not loving the Fury of Firestorm more?

Well, I think part of it is the two Firestorms = one big crazy monster Firestorm. There is something a little too Hulk-like in this issue – particularly the Betty Ross-ishness of Tonya as the girl who can reach the man (okay, men) inside the monster.

But honestly – and probably more significantly – Jason and Ronnie aren’t really all that likable. Jason comes off like a jerk. And while Ronnie fares a bit better, he seems a bit more weak and less confident. They just aren’t the guys I liked from the previous Firestorm books. I imagine the idea was to really introduce different takes on the characters, but for me, it seems like it went too far.

The thing is, there are some cool ideas in this book. And as I said, I like the artist(not as keen on the colouring though – especially the red and yellow Firestorms). But it’s just not clicking.

Now, I have said I’ll be giving all the new 52 books I’m reading up to at least issue 3 before I do any dropping. So there’s one more issue to grab me. But given my affection for everyone on this book, I’m a bit shocked that this is even on my list for potential droppage.

One more issue. The elements are there. Maybe the third time will be the charm.

(Note: the art got knocked down a number because I find the colouring a bit bland.)
