Every month I look forward to TMNT ongoing. Not just because of Duncan’s pencils and Eastman’s plot scripted by Tom Waltz, but also because the presentation is terrific. The paper is nice and the weight of the book feels great in the hands. It yearns to be read and if you’re not reading it now, and it’s added to your pull list, it’ll quickly make its way to the top of your stack. The tone of this book is dark but is lighter than the original’s by Eastman and Laird because many of the elements from the 80’s cartoon series are included. That makes some of the humor grim but most of it is light and that creates a book for all readers of each Turtle Era. They’ve also created new characters and place settings which are sure to delight longtime fans craving something new but something familiar.

This month’s book finishes out the latest story arc in a climactic fight that’s been brewing since Splinter was kidnapped in issue eight. The four brothers are joined by Casey and some of his friends the team met in an earlier issue. Some of the story is a bit of a leap – like why Angel owes Casey enough to infiltrate a Foot Ninja hideout in the first place – but it’s mostly to move the story forward and will probably be covered in future issues. My faith for this is in knowing that almost every loose thread from the previous arcs is nicely explained in this action packed issue. There is a sense of finality to this story line after the inevitable brawl and then, before you’re ready to move on to the entertaining letter’s section, events are set in motion for the next big arc.

Unfortunately Duncan is moving on to other projects and will no longer be the penciler for TMNT ongoing. He will be missed but will probably have time in his schedule for variant cover’s in the future (there are a lot of TMNT variant cover’s). Rhonda Pattison will more than likely continue on colors as there has been no indication otherwise. This is a great thing for every fan of this book because she is extremely talented. She is able to keep it serious and grim and then turn the book around and create a palette that draws you in to the gentler and sometimes humorous moments in this series. If you’re a fan of TMNT in any of its incarnations why aren’t you reading this book?

You can pick up the TPB of the initial arc of issues 1-5 but you’re missing out if you don’t go find the back issues leading up to this issue – #12. If you’re finding that hard to do I’d suggest at least picking up the Splinter micro-series and last month’s #11 before reading this issue.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent

  1. This is one of my favorite ongoing comic book series. Great review.

  2. Very nice review, I hope they read it on the podcast because this book deserves the attention. I had no idea about Duncan leaving, I’m bummed about it, but I actually haven’t been overly fond of his recent style change anyways. What the heck could he be moving to that is better than this book?!
