Having enjoyed Sean McKeever's work on Mary Jane Loves Spider-Man and having enjoyed the Teen Titans since I started seriously reading DC books, I was excited for McKeever's work on the title especially since he said it was going to be more character driven like MJLSM.
This book isn't bad, and if I wasn't in a negative mood after reviewing a few of my other books I might have rated it higher, but like a lot of what I read this week it really just did not do it for me, and partly because it seemed to rest on the some what illogical actions and moral stance of Robin.
The story is about Miss Martian's isolation from the team. Last issue was about Ravager's isolation from the team. The issue before that was about Kid Devil's isolation from the team. Sensing a pattern? I know that teenagers can feel like nobody gets them, and they've got nowhere to turn, but this feels like we're hammering a horse that's died long ago.
Robin's illogical actions are when Miss Martian asks him to get some fake documents for her so that she can attend school like a normal girl. Robin takes the stand that it would be breaking the law, despite the fact that faking identites is a regular occurance for heroes in the DCU. Batman made up fake documents for Wonder Woman, Clark Kent is at its most basic a fake identity, and I can't imagine Robin telling off Superman for having a fake passport. Arisia, Martian Manhunter, Supergirl are all aliens that have made lives for themselves on earth. In Gotham Batgirl obviously has some fake ID going on, to compensate for the fact that she was born to a convicted killer in a secret death cult / terrorist organization who probably were not big on filling in paper work.
Anyway Robin says no, you can't have any ID which makes Miss Martian angry. Even angrier since apparently she's either got martian split personalities or another martian living inside her. It's something that I've missed in pervious issues, so it probably should have been explained a bit better for new readers.
I like Sean McKeever but I can't help feeling like this title is just spinning its wheels. This new threat against them is just another "Oh look another grouping of Teen Titan analouges to fight" which after fighting the Titans East and then alternate reality/future versions of themselves is getting to be a bit tired.
But maybe I'm just cranky.
