DC’s next shot at a special ops team book has a bit more potential, I think, than BLACKHAWKS did, if only because more of the cast is recognizable. Most of the team shows up elsewhere in the DCnU, often as major characters of other books, and that lends TEAM 7 a bit of extra star power.

Though issue #0 is one of those “run down the talents of all the characters on the team and recruit them” issues, it sets up a book that could be a lot of fun. I like the varied cast, and the writing here suggests that maybe Justin Jordan can handle the ensemble nature of the thing. Time will tell.

The other thing I find interesting about TEAM 7 is that, because characters like Grifter and Deathstroke clearly do not belong to it anymore in the “present” of the DCnU, it seems like this series might exist in the “five years ago” realm of the line for more than just this zero issue. Which could be interesting, depending…

I’m eager to see where TEAM 7 will go. This is a series that will live or die on execution: with no A-listers in the roster (with the possible exception of Black Canary) the cast probably won’t draw loads of readers, and the nature of any special ops story requires that the plotting is top-notch. Likewise, as a team book with a pretty large team, the character work is going to have to be impressive. But for now, I’m along for the ride.
