I grabbed #1 because it started to seem that Nick Spencer was a writer with original ideas and the skills to turn them into a decent plot and script. #2 grabbed me with the more human aspects of it's story. This latest issue may be the point where it became one of my favourite books.
Told along two timelines, one in the past and one in the (almost) present, this presents the Thunder recruiters efforts to bring the powerful Noman back into the team in order to retrieve the kidnapped Raven. The problems with bringing Noman back lie in his origins, which are told in a gorgeous flashback sequence pencilled by the awesome Howard Chaykin. Noman is essentially a being apparently capable of cloning himself, the sideffect being that the cloning process has gradually stripped him of his empathy, to the extent that when his wife hangs herself he simply sits and watches, the event that originally precipitated his exit from the team.
With this episode Spencer makes an excellent job of tying the current incarnation of the Thunder Agents to the originals. The flashbacks give it that legacy feel that books like Starman, Iron Fist and numerous others excelled at. They also have a real dark sense of forboding to them, not unlike the birth of Dr Manhattan in Watchmen ( a comparison that may well be deliberate, but is no less effective for it's familiarity.) Meanwhile in the present the team infiltrates the headquarters of a Spider cell to retrieve their comrade. Spencer paints the Spider terrorists as fresh out of college with the stereotypical MTV generation attention span....which proves to be a false assumption by Thunder, as their enemies quickly pull the rug out from the rescue attempt and set up a nice cliffhanger.
I think it might be true to throw up a minor criticism, in that the larger story doesn't move along much in this issue. I don't have a huge problem with this, as this kind of depth has always added to my enjoyment of a book. In terms of pencils, the Cafu work is effective, if a little plain at times. Chaykin is an absolute treat as always though. I know he's not everyone's cup of tea, but I love when he shows up, especially on a quality book like this. Sweet little bit of minimalist art from Chris Sprouse on the cover too.
Unfortunately for me, this is the kind of comic that has premature cancellation all over it. It's carving out an unusual and unique story, but it's not part of greater DC continuity, features unfamiliar Silver Age characters and it's a bit of a slow burn. I really hope it's gonna buck the trend of books you can describe like that and keep going long enough for Spencer to tell his story.
Art: 5 - Excellent
