What a surprise! This ain’t your Dad’s Amethyst.

Totally enjoyable. Great art in both the Amethyst story and the Beowulf back up. DC seems to be serious about quality for this title.

No need to give you a plot synopsis. I’ll just say that Christy Marx’s script has a nice “authenticity” to the language, and the pacing is spot on. A LOT of exposition is achieved without making us read tons of narration. Crafty.

Plus, we get an obviously evil Mordiel who is looking to destroy heirs to the throne/power by snuffing them and then snorting their essence (cool)….and SWORDS…and strong women who kick ASS.

I also like that these women are not dressed like strippers or Barbarella.

Bedard updates Beowulf and places it somewhere in the future. So we get a nifty mix of post-apocalyptic/technology/Ancient Mythology. It works.

I’m in for issue 2.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent
