Sweets has gone from being a fun detective story into one of the most gripping noir tales I read every month. It’ll be sad to see it end next month, but for right now we’ve got one of the most intense penultimate issues of a story I’ve read in a very long time. Kody Chamberlain is pulling out all the stops in turning this into one of the best crime books in recent years; there’s a nice, sadistic twist in the tale that feels perfect for the tone of the book and helps to develop the characters beyond mere caricatures. Chamberlain’s art is an amazing thing to look at, too; the main bulk of the book is dominated by a Sean Phillips-esque moody style that gives the book a more mature, brutal feeling, while there’s also a creepy, immensely cartoony flashback sequence which serves as the book’s most chilling moment. I have no idea how Sweets is going to resolve next issue, but hopefully it holds up alongside these first four spectacular instalments.

Story: 5 - Excellent
