Sweet Tooth 1-I want to preference this review by saying I’m a huge fan of the Vertigo line in concept. I think it is really cool that they give creators a venue to put out stuff that might not get the press it needs to survive as a line of one of the big 2. Preacher and Transmetropolitan and, obviously, Shade the Changing man are some of my favorite comics of all time.

THAT BEING SAID.

I don’t think I have liked a new launch from Vertigo since Scalped came out. I tried Unwritten and feel like I completely missed the boat on that one.

I gave this book a try because, hell, it’s a buck and the art from the previews reminds me a lot of Peter Gross. The art was in fact that rare mixture of mostly simplistic looking but still very capable and expressive.

I just didn’t care for the story. It kind of read like it wanted to be David Lynch but didn’t really seem to go full on weird.

Actually it felt more like a Fall Out Boy video than anything else. Just a lot of surface and not a lot of death.

I’m sure this story will flesh itself out as it goes along, and it wasn’t bad, even if it did give the ending away in the preview and the isolation part felt too much like The Village for my tastes. I’ll give it a few more issues, but this issue didn’t grab me

Story: 3 - Good
Art: 3 - Good

  1. 1. Unwritten is awesome. 2. The Fall Out Boy reference is a little cheap. Just because the kid has antlers? To use that element to suggest that this is "more like a Fall Out Boy video than anything else" is a major stretch.

  2. Unwritten definitely has this one beat.  Sweet Tooth is way better then Greek Street but I don’t wanna read neither of them until the softcovers come out.  I’ll probably drop Unwritten for trade waiting after this arc is over.  I’m trying to find the appropriate place to drop House Of Mystery too.  I guess after the Halloween Special?
