I have only a minor quibble with Marco Rudy’s art on SWAMP THING #11, and that’s that when creatures made of rotted flesh and creatures made of plant life try to tear each other apart, it starts to become difficult to distinguish body parts. Sometimes it takes a little staring at a panel to figure out what’s just happened.

But overall, the writing and the art are excellent and atmospheric, and get me psyched again for the continuing struggle against the Rot. One could fault this issue for being a bit exposition-y (or at least monologue-y), but I find that I don’t mind Scott Snyder monologues much, especially with an artist as capable as Rudy rendering the horrors of Anton Arcane and his Un-Men.

This is a solid climax to this phase of the SWAMP THING story; next month, Swampy and ANIMAL MAN finally team up. That’ll be a hell of a thing.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 4 - Very Good

  1. Agree, pretty strong for a build up issue. Rotworld should be awesome, it will be my first contact with animal man in the new 52 ( in know, shame on me). Rudys Art is solid but a steo down from paquette/francavilla. beside the complain you mentioned, i would add to the list that he doesn’t get the thick, organic panelborders. they looked good when paquette used them in the first issues, but in this was not impressed.

    • I guess I didn’t pay much attention to the borders – which in itself means they are less than Paquette level. I do think Rudy is not all Paquette was, though as I was writing this up I felt like I’d said that in an earlier Swampy review closer to when the change happened and didn’t want to harp on it too much.
