So, I’m at least a little bit conflicted about my 12 issue investment in The World of New Krypton. I genuinely like the world created here. I think there are loads of untapped novel ideas all over New Krypton that I would love to hear more about, but unfortunately those things were mostly bypassed in order to tell a fairly conventional and lackluster story; a who-done-it where I’m still not entirely sure who did it or why, followed by a surprise-ish cliff-hanger ending that I don’t really have any inclination to see resolved.

I have liked much of the run to this point, but mostly what I liked was just seeing New Krypton itself. The story in some way seemed almost tailored to that purpose with the narrative feeling like little more that a patchwork excuse for a travelogue. I didn’t really mind that until now, when we’re at the conclusion to the run, and we’re looking to tie together the loose ends of a story I only now realize I didn’t care about all along.

The only relationship that felt all that compelling was between Kal-el and Zod, and that we only got in fits and starts along the way. I don’t even know what function at all Adam Strange was intended to serve in this story. His presence felt more like aimless stunt casting than anything else. Beyond that, the cast of characters was too big to remember who was who in some cases, or to get a feel for them as people in almost all cases.

I don’t necessarily mind having read this series, but I don’t know that I could ever imagine recommending a collection of it to anyone as being anything more than aimless and unnecessary.
