I almost didn’t want to do a review of this comic considering its already been reviewed by everybody and their dog, however this shows the strength of this comic forcing me to come on the internet and spread my “oh so important opinion” to the masses.

The issue is essentially split into two parts. The first part of the issue is the conclusion of the story threads that have been running through this miniseries and the second is just good characterisation of the cast while also acting as an epilogue.

Shockingly the least interesting part of the book was the first half. This wasn’t helped by the long delay between issue 5 and 6. However the other problem was that this part of the issue is essentially nothing more than a fist fight. A well drawn fist fight that does serve the purpose of the story and does a good job of showing the villains in a villainy light but a fist fight none the less.

No, where this issue really shines is the second half in which there are just some pitch perfect character moments that show the dynamic between the main characters including Clark Kent and Lois, as well as Superman and Lex Luthor.

Geoff Johns grasp of Superman is highly impressive. I wasn’t a huge fan of his previous run on Superman, I liked it but I didn’t love it, here however he succeeds in getting to the core essence of what the Superman character is about. He doesn’t need to analyse what works about the character yet also doesn’t treat the character like the messiah do gooder parody he has occasionally been portrayed as.

As for the artwork, Gary Frank does a very good job. He sometimes drew a few arkward faces and sometimes made Superman look like a man in a Superman costume rather than Superman in a suit but there was nothing that was worth getting your spandex all tied up over.

Overall this issue, and the miniseries as a whole, has been a success. Whilst not exactly reinventing the wheels of the Superman mythos its definately gave them a darn good clean and reminded us why we liked to use wheels in the first place.
