From the very first page, Superman Family Adventures is very upfront about what it is. It’s a straightforward, two-fisted adventure comic featuring the exploits of Superman, Supergirl, Superboy, Krypto and Lois Lane.

I personally feel that Superman, more than any other Big Two character, thrives most in this venue. Superman is a bright, optimistic character with powers far beyond mortal men. Rather than saddling him with angst and melodrama, he should be fighting 20-foot tall robots and mad scientists that are prone to fits of maniacal laughter. Art Baltazar and Franco play to Superman’s strengths and the book benefits greatly as a result. I haven’t had this much fun reading a Superman book in quite some time.

Make no mistake, this is not Superman Lite. This is Superman Classic. The lighter tone and self-contained “done in one” plotting of Superman Family Adventures perfectly captures the fun-loving spirit of the silver age while keeping the sensibilities and humor of modern comics. I would have loved this book as a child and would definitely suggest it to any younger people in your life. Recommended.
