This went from bad to worse and then managed to go even further down.
For me, worst comic of the year nominee for sure.
I am a comic book child of the late 80's and early 90's. Therefore, throw names like Doomsday and Cyborg Superman and it is a no brainier to pick this up.
So why was this so terrible:
1. Hank Henshaw / Cyborg Superman - Many people may scuff and scowl when they think of this character, but he is one of my all time favorites. An evil guy who just wants to die and will go to any length to do it. He has hated what he has become and just wants it to end. Even the anti-monitor could not kill him. The end of Sinestro Corps war where he brought back and sheds a tear is epic. Geoff Johns nailed it. Even Tony Benard in Green Lantern Corps did an alright job, but gave it a shitty cop out ending. So what does Robinson do? Makes him scared of death? Are you kidding me? This has to be the worst characterization of any character I have ever read. If this was the way the character was going to act, I would never read another comic with him in it and would be the cheap 90's gag that everyone hates.
2. Cyborg Doomsday - There are some off the wall things acceptable in comics. This is not one of them. Unimaginative and poorly executed. I do get the nature of the Doomsday character, but this was a step in the wrong direction. The really wrong direction, like off a cliff wrong.
3. I do not want to read these books I do not normally pick up. I stay away from these things at this point, but with Reign of Doomsday, they had me give it a shot and now find myself angry that I am picking up these books under this banner just to get sales up.
I could also mention Robinson's WAY TO TALKY dialogue, but it is what people expect from him and just not making me a fan.
The only salvageable thing from this book, was the art. A lot of it was gorgeous. However, with such a bad story line it was hard to sit there and enjoy the art knowing what I had just read. Also, I can say a lot of good things about the art, but the new Doomsday design is dreadful. Like most things in this book, it was completely off the mark.
I never thought I would not pick up a book with Cyborg Superman or Doomsday, but this has me really considering it and very dissatisfied to see some of my favorite characters being butchered. Luckily not a whole lot of people are reading this and hope most will forget this exists. Is this is anyone's first exposure to the characters, I am sorry.
