For a while there, this book seemed hopeless. After Loeb’s run, Superman / Batman seemed to fall into the same old rut as the old pre-Crisis World’s Finest series. Just how many times can you team-up Superman and Batman before it becomes stale? Then DC releases Trinity – Superman, Batman, AND Wonder Woman -- and suddenly the Superman / Batman book seems downright superfluous.
But don’t tell that to Green and Johnson who beat the odds and deliver another great issue with art by Rags Morales and John Dell that is just awesome. The plot of this arc isn’t exactly original; a fight with Silver Banshee (last issue) gives Batman all of Superman’s powers and leaves
There’s plenty of great scenes this issue. I particularly like the image of the Batman hovering before Jim Gordon, and later, Clark
I guess the book doesn’t quite fit into DC continuity (Batman RIP and all), but who cares? This works for me the same way All-Star Superman did, updating classic material from the silver age in a modern telling. Just go with it!
