This issue of Superman was a pseudo “fill in” written and illustrated not by regular series writer and artist JMS and Ed Barrows, but G. Willow Wilson and Leandro Oliveira.
Lois Lane is back in ol’collegetown USA in preparation for the arrival of Superman as he tours across America.

As soon as she has arrived she runs into a ex-boyfriend and strikes up a conversation about the baby he’s carrying with him only to be interrupted by some young Co-eds who turn out to be members in the Sorority that Lois was once a member of. Eventually Lois ends up at the house of the boyfriend of old, being introduced to his beautiful and successful wife. This gets Lois to start looking at the other side of the coin of her life. Lois laments that no matter how successful she is it will always be overshadowed by the fact that she’ll always be seen as superman’s main squeeze. Everything culminates when Superman sweeps her off her feet, and they have a marital discussion that end with us knowing that the couple love each other and need one another.

The issue sometimes dragged in the dialogue when it felt awkward and forced in the way that Lois began to vocalize things most of us would only think, because we know they sound that cheesy. It did work to the advantage that many of us think this way sometimes. We like to feel wanted by our significant other, and seeing Lois come to that conclusion even though she is one of the strongest female characters in the DC universe.

I went into Superman 704 not expecting much, but this stand alone tale of Lois Lane and her homecoming although sometimes really awkward really made me think about how in my life sometimes my insecurities can get the better of me, but my life is what it is, and that’s pretty cool.
