Superman has a new creative team (Dan Jurgens and Keith Giffen) and will supposedly be going in a different direction from now on. It wasn’t amazing, but it got my ‘pick of the week’ anyway, because I love Superman and most importantly, it was an improvement.

It isn’t up to Action Comics standard, and for me it still doesn’t beat the worst of the ‘Bat’ books, but a definite improvement. Booster Gold was one of my favourite pre-52 books so I always enjoy Dan Jurgens art, and it’s mostly solid here, but I will say on a couple of pages I thought Superman’s anatomy looked a little off, particularly on the first two-page spread of the book. It lets the action down a little bit art wise, but I still like most of it, especially the Daily Planet stuff. On the subject of art I’d like to mention Ivan Reis, Joe Prado and Rod Reis – the cover for this issue was my favourite yet of the whole series.

Story wise it’s beginning to tie together all of the Daemonites stuff, so hopefully the crossover arc I’ve found entirely uninteresting will now be brought into sharper focus. I just haven’t really cared about them, even though I read the books related to this crossover (Stormwatch, Grifter) but courtesy of quite a wordy speech from Helspont the seriousness of the invasion is starting to become clear. It’s a small three-panel thing but I love seeing Flash, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern in the flames while he’s talking.

A lot of people have been saying they want more Clark Kent and Daily Planet, and there is more here. The new modern Daily Planet seems to have been abandoned somewhat for the old news room feel. It is great to see Clark being hassled by everyone around him, it’s something that really was missing from the first six. But it is only two or three pages so I’ll look forward to more coming up, hopefully.

Also how about that costume activation thing..? Not sure about that.. I’ll look forward to issue #8

Story: 3 - Good

  1. Cool review! I’m curious to read this as I disliked #1 (too wordyyyyyyy) and I happen to be quite enjoying JLI written and drawn by the same team.

  2. I agree- this was definitely a step in the right direction! I enjoyed this issue a lot more than previous issues… And Merino added a nice new dimension to Jurgens’ pencils. Looking forward to the next issue!
