Huh? Color me confused, but I really don't know what's going on here. Is Atlas really that much different of a threat to Superman than anything else has been that's knocked him around Metropolis? (Answer: apparently yes) I dunno, something about it just rang false to me. And I have complete faith that Robinson has a definite reason for this, but I would much rather see the reason for Atlas's superiority explained up front, rather than have it be a mystery to be revealed later on. I've seen Superman knocked around so many times, that you actually have to tell me why it's different than every other time, or I'm not going to be very concerned about it.
Also, the whole 'Zatanna fight' was a little off, too. I like that Clark and Lois have marital spats like everyone else. That's not the problem. That was actually a good scene. I just didn't like Lois standing there watching Supes get his head thrown through the pavement thinking, 'Baby... no... not after this morning..." It wasn't THAT big of a fight. It's not like she actually accused him of having an affair or anything. She had a low self-esteem morning is all, and they already kissed and made up. End of fight. I mean, yeah, she should be saying "Baby... no..." watching her husband getting his face rearranged, but the morning spat really shouldn't have been that much of a factor on her level of concern.
I also didn't really like the art. By that, I mean, I hated the art. Atlas looks like a bright pink Clayface. His body and muscles are all gross and gloopy and bumpy... He doesn't look strong; he looks misshapen. Superman too, to a lesser extent.
And I know nothing about Krypto, so I'll just leave that alone for now.
This isn't a BAD opening arc for Robinson, but I feel like this first three issues, and probably the next one, could have been done in two issues tops. He, as always, has a great handle on dialogue and character driven stories, which is what separates a great Superman story from an average one. He just needs to pick up the pacing on his plots a little more and give a little more of the big picture to start with. (Superman and Starman are very different animals... Jack Knight can have a knockdown drag out brawl through the city streets and it's a big deal... Superman... not so much.) If he can do that, I think this title will be really good for a long time to come.
Art: 1 - Poor
I totally hear where you’re coming from on the Superman getting beat to hell by Atlas ringing false. It kind of felt to me like that early issue of Trinity where Konvikt punched out Superman with one hit and I had to call bull****…
