SUPERMAN #10 is a little disappointing. On the one hand, I was optimistic about things going in from the first part of this story last month; I liked Anguish fine as a villain and the breaking story about Superman's secret identity was a fine plot, too.
And though the mistaken identity angle pays off a bit (if not as well as perhaps it could've), Anguish really doesn't. Turns out she's yet another female character driven to villainy by a history of domestic abuse. I appreciate when characters are used to approach this very-real problem in an intelligent, useful way, but somewhere along the line it became this stereotype, that women would only ever be a superhero or supervillain as a result of being raped or abused, and then it just becomes sort of a throwaway, meaningless thing. Anguish is one of those.
At least there's something else brewing for Superman, as we get the barest glimpse of what that sub he saved last month was up to...I do like this kind of plotting. Hopefully whatever thing the Russians pulled off the ocean floor isn't an abuse victim, too.
