This was an interesting issue for two reasons. The first being that “Reign of Doomsday” was making its way through the Superboy book. I have not read any of the doomsday material, as this is part 5 of a bigger story. I thought Lemire does a great job of continuing his intended superboy story, as is evident in the opening scene.

Secondly, Lemire continued to focus on various subplots, for example one between Simon and Dr. Palmer. This was a great touch because I felt like I wasn’t missing a beat in the original superboy story. Another writing style that Lemire uses is telling the story of doomsday through Conner Kent’s eyes. This was awesome because I was asking myself various questions and realized that Conner Kent was asking the same questions, such as, “Where the hell did he(Doomsday) come from?” Lemire effectively connects the Reign of Doomsday story into this book with some readers (myself included) who are not reading it. Telling the story through Conner’s experiences still makes this feel like a regular superboy issue and not an “event” book.

I loved the new art direction on this book from Marco Rudy, which include a series of small panels that slowly changed as the events in the book grew bigger and bigger. The small throw backs to the death of superman worked well and reminded me of a great story I have forgotten about. I hope Marco Rudy will be around for a few more issues. Overall this was a great issue and must read for all superman fans.
