The continued darkening of the new 52 DCU still baffles me. Whereas a book like Deathstroke is beyond unsatisfying, Suicide Squad has me riding a roller coaster, one minute I love it and the next I am not sure, and this issue is a prime example of why.
Adam Glass has crafted a very dark journey into the mind o Harley Quinn, and this issue is far from pretty. We get the new origin of Harley, and as disturbing as it was, it fits in perfect with the tone of the title.
The art was very good. Clayton Henry Ig Guara and Scott Hanna did a damn good job with this issue. The whole talking to Deadshot in tghe chair was very well done…and the last page? WOW!
For all that good though, the comic still reads like a video game to me. The characters have become stereotypes and I think story and characterization is being sacrificed to tie things up quick.
I feel like Edmund Gwynn at the end of The WIld Bunch when he said “These ain’t the good ol days…but they’ll do for now” or something to that effect. I’ll keep coming back for more but will still yearn for a little more…
Art: 4 - Very Good

I am very interested in the new origin of Harley. Could this issue read as a standalone, or should I read all the back issues so I don’t miss anything?
Issue 6 would probably help, but I don’t think it’s necessary to go back more. If you find you like the characters and story the rest of the run is decent enough, if not anything really special. For my money though, this was the best issue the series has to offer. The review does a good job of summing things up: not much in the vein of character development (besides Harley I guess), but a very dark tale that can be anything from fun to appalling in a single issue. I just wish it was a little more consistently fun like a certain book Deadshot used to be in… but this will do for now.
