James Robinson’s descent into non-entity in the comic book community reaches something of a blip on the proverbial radar with this one-shot focusing on the characters of Starman and Congorilla. It’s a strange one-shot to consider; two fun characters who don’t immediately seem to warrant their own focal series, or even a focal issue, separate from the series they appear in. But somehow Robinson makes it work, as a story; they relationship between the two leads to some interesting character development and it all seems to mesh well. Except for the dialogue; this may not be as wordy as early Starman issues, but everything here feels overwritten – there were a few pages covered in blocks of text which seemed wholly unnecessary. The real star of the book is Brett Booth’s artwork, which is glorious to behold and only whets the appetite more for his upcoming run on JLA with Robinson; it’s a very scratchy, intense style that captures the mood immediately and carries through the complexity of the story with its own keen sense of drama and character action.
