Second versus same as the first.
I really liked the J.J. Abrams Trek film. As a huge Star Trek fan it satisfied my nerd desire to break it from the original continuity and it also somehow took what should have been an awful story on paper and make it into a great action flick. Since a sequel is on the way it was inevitable we got a comic set in the New Trek universe. Which to me is great because maybe we can get some new Star Trek stories with this crew we haven't seen or read before.
Somewhat disappointingly though, if your a Star Trek fan you've seen this all before.
This story is a retelling of the TOS second pilot "Where No Man Has Gone Before" where in the Enterprise attempts to cross the edge of the galaxy only to find that not only can it not do so but apparently the attempt has changed one the crew giving him god like powers.
The beats from the episode are pretty much hit exactly here (as well as some pieces of dialog) showing a great deal of reverence for the source material. While this was cool (as were the other myriad of TOS references littered through the book)I found it disappointing they settled for doing a "cover" version of one the original series's best episodes rather than a new story.
Still this is well executed and it's hard to argue that if your going to redo episodes from TOS in this series that you shouldn't start here at well, the beginning. Also worth noting is that the characterization is well in line with the film. Spock and Uhura still have a relationship. Kirk and Spock still have some tension between them as well.
I do recommend you pick this up if you liked the film or are a Trek fan. And hey this is just the first part of this story. Who knows it could end a lot differently than it did originally (but probably not).

I knew the story was familiar. Man I gotta rewatch TOS to notice anymore call backs
