I recently watched an episode of THE TOTALLY RAD SHOW and they talked about JMS’s work on Squadron Supreme. Much to my surprise this Wednesday I went into my shop and there it was: Squadron Supreme 2 #1.

In my opinion if you’re going to relaunch a comic at number one than it should accessible to new readers. It should be a launching point to bring in new readers and a new story. This comic was a mess. I had no idea what was going on or who any of the members of the Squadron Supreme are. They give better introductions to the astronauts in this issue than they do the REAL stars of this book. It’s also strange that Nick Fury is hanging around with them. I don’t know why he is ether. Did I miss something? There are awkward bits of dialogue between the astronauts as well that felt really forced.

It’s so much easier to take art that isn’t great when you have a coherent story to grab on to. This book makes the art a bitter pill to swallow. There were a lot of TV screens to read in this issue and the reporters all looked incredibly awkward and weird. No one working as a television reporter would allow themselves to be shot at the angles that are drawn nor would they ever make the gestures and facial expressions depicted here. I know that’s totally nitpicking but when those are the opening pages it makes it all the more difficult to become engrossed in a story I was genuinely interested in getting on board with.

The PREVIOUSLY page that is supposed to get you caught up on the story explains the squad. It has this really cool picture with all these unique characters blasting off to do whatever it is they. The cover is the same story. The characters all look unique and intriguing. Sadly, none of that energy made it into the book. Maybe issue 2 will be something better. More exciting and enthralling. The only problem is that I won’t be there to read it.

Story: 1 - Poor
Art: 2 - Average

  1. Thank you for posting a review and confirming I’m not missing anything.

I very much liked JMS’ work on this book, but I’ve seen no reason to follow it since it kind of died on the vine.

  2. I agree with your review, this book was trash. I think you were being kind giving the art 2 outta 5.

The original MAX Squadron Supreme was kinda like a real world take on the JLA. What would happen if these type of superheroes were in our world etc. and it was AWESOME. So now, this book is trying to do "real world" versions of the big Marvel characters, and the original Squadron members (the main ones) arn’t even in this.

Maybe if they launched this as a totally new book & people wern’t expecting to see The Squadron Supreme (and they had a better writer & artist) this would have worked better.

  3. Didn’t they already make this book?  Wasn’t it called the Ulitmates?  I could be wrong.  I hated that the sent Ulitmate Nick Fury to the New Squadran Supreme universe.  Who thought that was a good idea?  I’m just sayin’…
